COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING INTERN

 

Location: Action Against Hunger UK – London Office
Department: Fundraising & Communications Department
Report to: Rachel Pinnick   
Period: 4 days per week
Planned date to begin interviews: 01/04/2010
Closing date : 21/03/2010

 

Action Against Hunger is an international humanitarian organisation providing immediate assistance and long-term relief to people suffering from the consequences of man-made and natural disasters. Action Against Hunger has been one of the leading organisations in the treatment of malnutrition since its creation in 1979, and has programmes in over 40 countries around the world focusing on nutrition, food security, water & sanitation, and basic health.

Description of the team

You will be working on a day-to-day basis alongside the Community Groups Manager to increase support for Action Against Hunger within the community and to nurture existing support in this area. You will also be a part of the wider Fundraising & Communications team made up of dedicated, passionate, motivated and friendly people. 
 
Objectives
 
  • To play a key role in researching, recruiting and developing the support of schools, universities, churches and other social/professional groups within the community
  • To foster good relations with existing community groups supporting the charity    
  • Organise and manage volunteers for monthly street collections
  • Assist on Events organisation
 
Areas of Activity include but are not limited to
 
  • Planning new strategies to engage with and develop the support of schools, universities, churches, rotary clubs and other social/ professional groups
  • Researching new opportunities for support amongst various community groups
  • Approaching schools, universities, churches and so on, describing the work of the charity and communicating the different ways in which they can support us   
  • Helping with the design and content of booklets, leaflets and flyers aimed at various community groups 
  • Updating the database and spreadsheets
  • General administration, processing payments etc
  • Helping out at monthly public collections
  • Working independently as well as in a team.
  • Participating in occasional fundraising events in the London area
  • Undertaking other suitable/ comparable duties as required by the Head of Department 
 
KEY COMPETENCIES
 
  • First degree or equivalent qualification/ other suitable experience
  • Fluent English speaker with good written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional telephone manner
  • Ability to juggle different tasks and to work independently as well as in a team
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings
  • Good knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft office software
  • Ability to show initiative and think creatively
  • Excellent research skills
 
DESIRABLE SKILLS
 
  • Experience in the charity or community sector but not essential
  • Experience in administrational and research roles
  • Good presentation skills
